Summer, Year 758 of the New Age
The Cape, Windborne

The first day she could hardly remember anymore. After the stag had brought her up from the beach, taking his time and waiting for her as she timidly followed where he had placed his hooves in a previous step. She only remembered how scared she had been and if it hadn’t been for the warm breeze that seemed to support her all the way she would probably have bolted down to the beach again, down to something she knew something about. She had stopped and just looked as they had come up from the beach, her eyes opened wide. Being so young she had never really questioned her mothers choices on where to go, never wondered why they never really went up and over the edge that rose above the sandy beach. Why had they traveled down there when it seemed to be plenty to eat up there?

Several seasons had gone past since the stag had brought her here, and she was now two years old. The first time she had been here she had been busy grazing, and hadn’t really cared much about the others. There hadn’t been any play with the other young ones. Surely there had been an awkward attempt from her side but she had never really played as she traveled with her mother and it was like she didn’t know how. At first she had thought they had attacked her for some reason and she had turned and made a run for it. That apparently had been some secret code for a race because soon there had been racing youngsters all around her, bucking and laughing. Half starved as she had been she hadn’t been able to run for very long even if the first dash of fear had made her legs move either way.

She had kept away from the places where you could go down to the beach below, instinctively aware that she had to be careful. As often as she could she had climbed to the highest post where ever the herd wandered and felt the wind pull her mane that had begun to grow into longer golden strands. She was still small and delicate compared to some of the other youngsters that had from the time they had abandoned their mother’s milk and started to eat grass and other things. The wind comforted her as she stood and looked out over the herd. Even while grazing, she constantly moved around, like there was some nervousness still lingering in her hooves. That became more apparent if there was a sudden call of a bird was brought to her ears by the wind, sometimes it was like it was something in the wind itself. That often made her jerk up her head and her large ears scanning for the source, just like her eyes and nose did. She didn’t even know what she was afraid of. Her mother’s words still, but fainter for each passing day, echoed in her mind. “…we must reach the Cape, my little whirlwind…we will be safe there…at the Cape…safe…”

Safe…the stag had said this was the Cape…but now she didn’t know what to do…mother had never told her what they would do once they got here...  Then there was the memory of the ‘Bad’…but nobody knew what it was. They had called it foal stories and told her to forget it.

Roughly a day’s travel from where the young doe was grazing two stags nosed at old tracks, near some shrubs. It wouldn’t fit for any of them to take shelter between but something had. Something they had been searching for. Something had made them take up their old hunt and the small strand of hair that still was stuck on a branch refueled their previous determination. A smile was shared between them, and then the older stag nodded in the direction they would go. As he turned he never saw how the other stags smile turned into something that seemed to be dipped in venom and how his eyes turned darker. He never spoke the words outloud; instead he spoke to himself and to the wind that pulled at his mane.

“There will be no trace left of you in this world, Aurora…Duathail help me…you have paid for your rejection…and your daughter will as well…”
